Unclogging Your Bathroom Sink On Your Own

Bathroom sinks tend to clog more than other sinks in your home. This can partly be true due to the large amount of hair that falls through the sink. Here are some steps you should take if you find your bathroom sink won\’t drain properly.

Use a plungers to unclog a minor problem. Try this first, since it doesn\’t require you to take the sink apart. Add some water to the sink bowl, and then plunge.

The best plunger to use on a sink is a force cup plunger. Plunge the sink at least four or five times before checking to see if the sink bowl has drained. If that solves the problem, run hot water from the faucet for a few minutes to be sure the problem is fixed.

If the plunging doesn\’t work, you will need to take out the sink trap. The part you will need to dismantle is the p-trap. Look for the tail pipe where the pipe dips low and curves.

Use a pipe wrench to dismantle the p-trap. The best way to take it out is to unscrew the nuts on the side. Have a bucket handy to catch all the slime that will fall out.

After the trap is taken off, your next step will be to clean out the trap. The trap will be full of grime and slush that never got a chance to go through the pipe. Clean the inside of the p-trap with a cleaning brush and clean out all the large pieces that could possibly be a clog hazard.

If that didn\’t fix the problem, the odds are that the clog is further down in the pipeline. For this type of issue you will need a snake. The best snake to use for this job would be a sink snake, or drill snake.

You can rent snakes from professional plumbers if you don\’t own one. Use protective gloves and run the snake downwards, moving it through the pipe. Be sure to move it through the pipeline more than once to be sure the clog has been dislodged. Reassemble the trap and repeat the process, or call a professional, if the problem is not fixed.

It\’s important to have a trustworthy plumber to take care of your plumbing needs and air conditioning, and heating
